Encompassing a 52-acre salt marsh bordered on the south by Middle Bay, the west by Bedell Creek, on the east by an unnamed tidal watercourse, and on the north by developed home sites, the Marine Nature Study Area is a portion of the natural tidal wetlands preserved and managed to enrich community life and add to the well-being of the public. First opened in 1970 and operated year-round by the Town of Hempstead’s Department of Conservation and Waterways, the Marine Nature Study Area features ponds, snaking walkways, canals, an abundance of wildlife, and much, much more. Its boardwalk and temporary classroom building serves as important education, research and management practices centers to share the vast significance of preserving natural resources and ensuring their protection for future generations. Guided tours for school and adult groups are available during weekdays, as well as opportunities for individual exploration!
