Since the mid-90s, therapeutic horseback riding programs for individuals with disabilities and other vulnerable populations. The training with the horses is for children and adults who have been abused or neglected, the military, and the impoverished. The volunteers are noted for their vibrant positivity and for setting an encouraging tone for everyone on site. The program’s objective is to help people learn about caring for horses while brightening their lives as individuals. Parents like the program, calling it a fun, inclusive way for young people to become accustomed to being around horses and the people who care for the animals.

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian takes horse riding and community to a deep, healing level for those in need. The equestrian-centered therapy caters to children, those with disabilities, the military, and people struggling with mental health, creating a safe space for all. Lisa A. Gatti, founder and CEO, began her career as a special education teacher in alternative high school settings across Long Island. In 1995, she decided to combine her love of horses and being a pillar for those in need, and opened Pal-O-Mine as a therapeutic horse riding program for those with disabilities with the intentions to provide a space of growth and healing. It now spans 13 acres holding a 20-stall barn, wellness center, greenhouse, and playground.

It’s been said that there’s a special bond that exists between humans and horses. At HorseAbility located on SUNY Old Westbury’s campus, there are plenty of opportunities to become a skilled rider. Since 1993, they have worked with novices, advanced riders, and people with learning disorders and developmental disabilities to meet their needs. Riders experience increased balance, muscle control and strength. They are also able to experience increased confidence, independence, and self esteem. HorseAbility’s facility is situated on 20 acres, boast three outdoor riding arenas, ample paddock space and a quarter mile grass track. Their new home is nestled in between sprawling hunt fields and a tranquil golf course, making it the premier destination for prospective and experienced students to ride with horses.

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian was created two decades ago as a program dedicated to helping people with disabilities. Long Islanders have been so impressed with the work it’s done helping people in need that it bestowed upon Pal-O-Mine the coveted distinction of Best Horseback Riding Facility on Long Island! The barn currently boasts 18 therapy horses and helps more than 300 people on a weekly basis. It helps both children and adults with disabilities as it strives toward its mission of helping everyone it can through its extraordinary therapeutic program. Among its offerings is a military program that helps treat military veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, too! Wow!

Nonprofit HorseAbility was founded in 1993 and has been helping Long Islanders with special needs ever since. Offering a number of programs, including therapeutic riding and hippotherapy, as well as a host of other equine activities, HorseAbility is dedicated to making a difference in every rider’s life, and even hosts a program designed just for veterans! HorseAbility created The Long Island Horse Show Series for Riders with Disabilities, is a member of the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International, and also hosts a summer camp!
